Letters concerning a scandal at Zion Chapel, Bedminster (Congregational), 1832-1835
8033/36-55
1832-1835
Item
Letters written to John Hare of Firfield House, Knowle, with copies of other letters. The first letter, dated 1832 refers to the appointments of the Rev. J.E. Good as minister of Zion Chapel, Bristol; the remainder, dated 1834-35, concern a scandal at the Chapel. It appears that a charge of adultery was brought against Mr. Good but the ministers of other congregations in the City held that he was innocent and that John Hare, the senior deacon at the Chapel, had promoted a conspiracy to injure his character. There are also references in the letters to the Endless Street Chapel at Salisbury where it seems to have been alleged that Mr. Good had excited prejudice against the minister.
