Administrative history
Jim Facey (1905-1977) was an World Press Award winning local photographer, working as chief photographer and picture editor for the Bristol Evening Post from 1932, before leaving journalism in 1945 to set up a commercial photography business. He rose to fame for his photographs of unemployment riots in Old Market Street in 1932, for which he won several awards. Facey kept just one album of his work, which contained his collection of World War Two pictures recording the devastation caused to Bristol by air raids. Some of the photographs were not published at the time because they were considered to be too sensitive by the authorities who were worried about Bristolians' morale during the heavy bombing. He retired aged 64 after 48 years of photographic work and died in 1977. The album was donated to Bristol Record Office by his son, David.
