TitleRichard Smith Papers
Date1735-1948
DescriptionRichard Smith junior was born 1772, elected to the Infirmary in 1796, became Senior Surgeon in 1812 and died 1843. His father had been elected to the Infirmary in 1771 and became Senior Surgeon in 1791. Outside of the Infirmary, Richard Smith was a freemason of the Royal Sussex Lodge of Hospitality, member of the Dolphin Society and Trustee of Red Maids School.

Richard Smith Jr began the 'biographical memoirs' after finding piles of documents regarding the Infirmary from its commencement left on the floor of 'The Old Ward' to "the depredations of the servants and patients". He determined to make memoranda from the books and carried them home to 17 College Street to make extracts at his leisure. Around 1780 Edward Ash asked to see his memoranda and encouraged him to enlarge it and give it a more regular shape. Others such as Mr Beck, Dr Plomer and Godfrey Lowe also provided him with additional material and he took the opportunity to converse with Drs Metford, Moncrieffe and others regarding the hospital's officers. Although his collection is not intended for the masses, "every Englishman must be tried by his peers and I have to hope that my jury will be formed by those who like to turn back a little into the older times and musty rolls of our predecessors and also feel some pleasure in observing the progress of a noble institution ... and what sort of people it has grown up from tender infancy to its present state of manhood."

The majority of the biographical memoir volumes have an accompanying index, and the first six volumes include contents pages. There is also a general index to topics covering all 14 volumes (35893/36/n_iii) and a card index (35893/90) available, in addition to the names and events highlighted in each catalogue entry.
