DescriptionAlthough there are few records related to the artistic output of the theatre, much can be gleaned from the large series of playbills within this collection (TR/Pub/1). The Theatre's main form of advertising, besides notices in local papers (see Richard Smith volumes, ref. 45883, for substantial collection of these), the playbills give detailed description of the productions, the cast lists, the sets, as well as information about touring companies and visiting stars gracing the stage in Bristol. The Trustees collected playbills from other theatres and these form a separate series (TR/Pub/3). Some of these theatres have close links to the Bristol Theatre Royal - The New Theatre Royal/Prince's Theatre (TR/Pub/3/4) was co-run by the Theatre Royal's manager James Chute in the 1860s and 70s, and Bath Theatre Royal (TR/Pub/3/6/1) was joined in the same circuit as Bristol several times during the eighteenth and nineteenth century.
The Trustees of the Theatre Royal deposited a large collection of publicity material relating to the Bristol Old Vic company's tenure of the theatre from 1946 onwards (TR/Pub/4). The box office cards and programmes have been catalogued here to series level. The Theatre Collection, University of Bristol, holds the archive of the Bristol Old Vic Company (ref. TC/BOV) which includes a complete set of programmes and posters. Bristol Archives also holds several series of programmes covering this period donated by individuals or organisations.
