Administrative historySamuel Baker, a Bristol mariner, was appointed water bailiff and harbour master at Bristol on 8 February 1853, serving until 1 January 1895. He appears to have died shortly after. The journal, an account of his voyages, travels and experiences, was started in 1864 at the request of his wife, to whom it was dedicated, continuing up until 1895.
