Date1897 - 1977
DescriptionThis collection contains photographs either gathered by or commissioned by the Bristol City Council Public Relations department to showcase the work of the City Council and its predecessors. The majority of the collection covers the 1950s - 1970s and shows aspects of life and work for both Council staff and the residents of Bristol, including improvements to roads and infrastructure, such as the Cumberland Basin Bridges Scheme of the 1960s (see /CUM). The collection also details the work of the Council to improve living standards for the citizens of Bristol by developing not only new houses and flats, but also green spaces and park land (see /HSG, and /EST). In addition there is also a series of photographs that details the provision of healthcare, and another that details schooling for Bristolians (see /PUB, and /SCH). There is also a series of portraits of most of the Lord Mayors of Bristol from 1907 until 1977, and a further series which includes portraits and images of many other council employees at work (see /LOR, and /COU). Further to these series there are many others in this collection that provide wonderful snapshots of life in Bristol during the mid-twentieth century. All catalogue entries include low-resolution digital copies of the photograph to which they relate.
