He attended Keynsham Grammar School, at his own request having visited the school, and read Music at Bristol University; he took his degree in 1973 and remained in touch with members of the Music Department for the rest of his life; he also worked with the University of Bristol Operatic Society. Initially he joined the Music staff, then added teaching English and eventually was a full time member of the English Department.
He was a fine pianist, an orchestral conductor and he composed music; an early work was a version of A Christmas Caral for Keynsham Grammar School. He developed his style as a composer at University, and this became a major part of his life. He composed many pieces for BGS, including the opera, Beauty and the Beast. He and his friend Derek Lucas, Head of the English Department, produced and directed operas and plays performed by the pupils.
He was closely involved with Bristol Intimate Opera and was the Musical Director for the Bristol Opera Company. He and Derek founded the Barrow Court Festival.
His musical compostions, including instrumental and choral pieces and several operas, form a major part of this deposit. He was also an author and a poet, and his writings are part of this deposit.
Apart from music, literature and drama he was an active member of the Jane Austen Society and of the Prayer Book Society, and he was for many years Churchwarden of St Ewen and on the Parochial Church Council of the Parish of Christchurch (City) with St Ewen.
