TitlePhotographs of industrial and commercial buildings in Bristol city centre, deposited by Bristol City Council Town Planning Department
Datec.1951 - 1956
DescriptionThis collection consists of two photograph albums containing images of the Broadmead (including re-development), Bedminster, and St Philips areas of Bristol during a period of post-war rebuilding and redevelopment in the early 1950s.

There is little information available about the provenance of these albums, although the existence of ranging poles and other measuring tools in the photographs suggest that they were taken as part of some sort of post-war buildings survey. Some of the images are annotated on the reverse with details of the location and the date that they were taken, however they are all stuck down to pages (a legacy of the original album) which has meant that in most cases the information has not been possible to recover and in many instances the location of the buildings depicted has been established using contemporary sources at our disposal.

ArrangementThe original volumes were split apart at some point prior to deposit, leaving individual sheets comprising between 1-4 photographs per sheet. These sheets are believed to reflect the original order of the pages in the volumes and they have been catalogued in this manner. The original albums seemed to have been laid out with regard to geographical location rather than the date that the photographs were taken (which has not always been possible to establish).
Custodial historyDeposited by member of staff from the model-making section of the City Planning Department in 1987. No further information was recorded at the point of deposit.
